Who are you!

August 12, 2010

Donal is doing a handful of gigs in advance of his Electric Picnic slots in September.  The first of these will form part of a new series of music and visuals called Who Are You! and has a staggeringly good line up with Hulk, Adrian Crowley and Lisa O’Neill

It happens on August 21st at Space 54 in Smithfield. Here are some rather nice videos of the folks involved

Cork Cork Cork

May 16, 2010

We’re bringing Fresh Air back to Cork this coming Friday 21st May and we’re already looking forward to it. The gig is going to be at Triskel‘s offsite venue; The SubStation on Caroline Street. Donal will be providing visuals as always, and music this time comes from Spilly Walker and Kevin Blake – so pack your dancing boots.

Listen back Fresh Air sessions on The Small Hours with Spilly Walker and Kevin Blake.

Fresh Air live at Triskel is on Friday 21st May with doors at 8pm.  Drinks can be purchased at The Old Oak and brought to the venue for the gig as the SubStation doesn’t have its own bar.  Tickets are €15/12 and available from Triskel in advance ((021) 427 2022 or buy online) , or on the door on the night.

Sligo kicks it off in style

May 2, 2010

Well.  Fresh Air is back, and boy did we kick it off in style in Sligo last night.  Fresh Air was part of a mammoth opening night for The Model, an arts centre in Sligo which was re-opening after a 2 year closure for a rebuild project.

Fresh Air used the brand new performance space at The Model which is a great grey box. We pushed all the seats back and set up  a separate station/stage for each of the acts around the room so that there wasn’t one main stage.  It meant that CatScars, Children Under Hoof, School Tour, Hunter Gatherer and Patrick Kelleher all played from different parts of the room and the audience had to move around to get the best view.  It led to a great festival atmosphere with people plonked all over the place, some sitting, some standing, some dancing.  We can’t wait to see the footage Myles and Steve got on film.

Poster time

April 26, 2010

Our lovely new poster courtesy of Peter Maybury of softsleeper , with the photo of Donal courtesy of Hector Castells. Keep an eye out for it in the gig towns: Sligo, Kerry, Cork and Limerick. It’s much more lovely in person, and there are flyers too.

Fresh Air back in May

April 19, 2010

As we mentioned a few weeks back Fresh Air is set to return this May with four more live dates around in Sligo, Kerry, Cork and Limerick and performances from Patrick Kelleher, CatScars, Hunter Gatherer, School Tour, Children Under Hoof, Hulk, Chequerboard, Adrian Crowley, Kevin Blake, Spilly Walker, Thread Pulls, Natural History Museum and Sunken Foal.  These live shows will all be presented by Donal Dineen, and he’ll also provide live visuals from his own photography and film work for the shows.

The live shows are being supported by The Music Network Performance and Touring award, and The Arts Council of Ireland who provide the funding for the scheme.  Thanks to their support we’re able to bring these great new irish acts to your ears.

As with last year’s Fresh Air, the live shows will be complimented by a series of live interviews and in-studio sessions with fresh irish artists on The Small Hours.  You can still listen back to the previous Fresh Air shows from November on Donal’s Today FM archive here>

We’re just finalising schedules for the radio shows but will publish info on them real soon. In the meantime here are the dates and artsits for the live series:

Saturday 1st May; Patrick Kelleher, CatScars, Hunter Gatherer, School Tour, Children Under Hoof in The Model, Sligo

Friday 7th May; Hulk, Chequerboard and Adrian Crowley in St. John’s Church, Ashe Street, Tralee for Club Head Bang Bang (Tickets from Lee Records)

Friday 21st May; Kevin Blake and Spilly Walker in Triskel, Cork

Friday 28th May; ThreadPulls, Natural History Museum and Sunken Foal for 8ball, Limerick

Check out the video page to get more of an idea of how the live shows go. They’re a little bit magic.

Fresh Air returns!

April 5, 2010

We’re delighted to formally announce that Fresh Air will be back in May of this year, and it’s largely thanks to The Music Network Performance and Touring award, and The Arts Council of Ireland who provide the funding for the scheme.

Following the reaction to the first Fresh Air in November last year Donal was really keen to bring it back to air, but he wanted to ensure a live element was part of the series once again.

There is certainly no shortage of innovative irish artists to chose from, and a whole host of new acts will be invited into The Small Hours studio to talk to Donal in May.  With thanks to the performance touring award there are 4 more live shows planned for Sligo, Newbridge, Cork and Limerick. We’re tying up the final details with the venues and the artists involved and plan to announce final details of these very special gigs later this week.  Once again Donal will be curating each performance specifically for the venue and town in question, and will provide visuals on the night itself.

If you want to get a feel for the Fresh Air live shows check out our video archive for some beautifully shot tracks from last year’s series by arbutus yarns.

Just a little note that we’ve updated the VIDEO page with all 6 of Myles’ excellent Fresh Air Live video’s from Thread Pulls, Patrick Kelleher, Katie Kim, Deaf Joe, James Yorkston and Dark Room Notes.  We’ve also thrown in clips from a gig Donal did the visuals for in Sligo as a precursor to Fresh Air, with Katie Kim and Valerie Francis. Enjoy……
